Fort Worth’s Boy Scouts of America Troop 50 didn’t let stay-at-home orders stop them from finding a creative way to give back to the community. The young men used their time and energy to build something that will continue to brighten the days of many of our most vulnerable residents.

During a recent virtual meeting and while discussing scout advancement goals, the troop decided to take on a community service project. With the onset of COVID-19, troop leaders needed to find something the scouts could participate in from home, but still make a meaningful impact.

The answer came via an online request from Envoy Hospice and Nursing to build birdfeeders to hang outside residents’ windows. The Envoy staff hoped to bring joy to their residents with birds and squirrels visiting the feeders. Troop 50 was the perfect partner to make it happen.

Troop leaders quickly crafted easy-to-assemble birdfeeder kits. The scouts picked up materials, took them home and assembled 50 feeders. The troop scheduled a Saturday in early May to deliver and hang the birdfeeders at two sites in Fort Worth. Scouts and their families practiced social distancing while setting up the feeders.

Mayor Pro Tem Jungus Jordan stopped by to lend a hand and thank the troop. “A great Saturday morning, a great project and an opportunity to share nature with the residents here. Thank you to all of the scout leaders and our future Eagle Scouts for their hard work and leadership,” Jordan said.
