Staff members from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing's Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth celebrate the Industry of the Year Award, along with Fort Worth Water Director Chris Harder and District 9 Councilmember Ann Zadeh.

Honored for its work in pollution prevention and water conservation, the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s Western Currency Facility in Fort Worth has been named Industry of the Year in the City of Fort Worth’s annual Environmental Awards program.

In the past year, the printing plant, 9000 Blue Mound Road, through its currency note reclamation process has saved the U.S. Treasury Department $15 million. The effort has saved 897,000 gallons of water and 776,000 gallons of wastewater, and reduced hazardous waste and industrial solid waste by 162,000 pounds. It has also saved 651,000 pounds of paper.

The plant, which opened in 1991, was also honored by the City and its water utility with a Pretreatment Partnership Award and a Pollution Prevention Award.

The awards were among several presented Wednesday during the 2019 Environmental Excellence Awards at River Ranch in the Stockyards. Councilmember Ann Zadeh gave the keynote address.

“I want to congratulate the award winners for their environmental stewardship. The water utility’s philosophy is to work with industries as our partners. Educating and helping businesses succeed is to the city’s benefit,” said Water Director Chris Harder.

In all, 61 Fort Worth companies were honored for their compliance with wastewater regulations. Those awards have been handed out since 1999. Another 23 companies in seven cities that contract with Fort Worth for industrial pretreatment services also earned recognition.

This year, the awards program saw the addition of the Innovation Award and the Recognition Award, to recognize companies advancing greater environmental awareness.

The Fort Worth location of Recaro, a German aircraft seating manufacturer, 2275 Eagle Parkway, was awarded the Innovation Award in the Solid Waste Reduction or Reuse category.

The company challenged its 600 employees to be sustainable in the office by bringing in coffee mugs and silverware from home. As a result, Styrofoam cups and plastic utensils are no longer used at their facility.

The company also replaced more than 1,500 lights at its facility with LED lightbulbs.

Fort Worth’s Stage West Theater and Fort Worth Starbucks locations won honorable mention awards in the same category.

Tarrant County College District was presented a Recognition Award as a SmartWater Conservation Partner, presented to an industrial, commercial or institutional customer implementing water efficiency strategies following a SmartWater audit.

Pollution Prevention Awards were also presented to Lockheed Martin, Alcon, Bell Helicopter Textron and MillerCoors Brewery.

The city’s Water and Code Compliance departments sponsor the awards.
