Stakeholders brainstorm Butler Place's future

On the first day of the workshop series, stakeholders discuss their vision for the future of Butler Place.

Fort Worth Housing Solutions welcomed a packed audience for two public workshops to discuss the future of the Butler Place public housing facility.

Led by City of Fort Worth Assistant City Manager Fernando Costa, residents and stakeholders from numerous groups participated, including the Tarrant County Black Historical and Genealogical Association, the Black Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, the NAACP, Downtown Fort Worth Inc., Tarrant County College and Trinity Metro.

Participants discussed redeveloping the site into something “transformative” and “catalytic” that aligns with Fort Worth’s economic development strategic plan. Others urged that proceeds from the sale of the 42-acre property go toward a museum focused on the city’s African American history.

Built in 1939, Butler Place will be vacant once all its residents have relocated to new apartment homes around the city by the end of 2020 through HUD’s Rental Assistance Demonstration program. See how Housing Solutions is helping residents find new apartment homes through the program that aims to decentralize public housing developments.

Fort Worth Housing Solutions has sought the community’s input and established a Butler Advisory Committee to make recommendations about the site’s redevelopment. Housing Solutions’ board of commissioners will deliberate on the site’s future and avoid rushing into a decision.

“This is a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we intend to get it right,” Housing Solutions President Mary-Margaret Lemons said.
