Have a day off? Share some love with a dog from the Fort Worth Animal Shelter

This squad is ready for a fun day exploring the city with new friends.

The Fort Worth Animal Shelter started an exciting new program this past year, giving residents an opportunity to spend a day or a weekend with a dog from the shelter — no strings attached.

With more than 14,000 animals coming into the shelter annually, providing a comfortable and safe environment for them while they wait to be adopted is a priority. Studies have shown that a day out of the shelter environment, or even one night away, can drastically decrease stress in a shelter dog and increase their adoptability.

The new Out & About program provides an opportunity for anyone to a dog and spend the day with them. Simply visit the main shelter, 4900 Martin St., during operating hours, sign in, choose a preselected dog and supplies, and go.

The shelter provides a map of dog-friendly places to visit around the city, and all dogs will be sent with a collar/harness, leash and a backpack full of goodies. You’ll also receive a foster dog report card. Any information you can provide will help shelter staff match the foster with the best adoptive family.

All dogs in the program have been spayed/neutered, microchipped and are current on their vaccinations.
