Two upcoming training series will teach Fort Worth residents how to prepare their household for a natural disaster and to help their neighborhood recover.
Fort Worth’s Community Emergency Response Team program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.
Free CERT courses will begin in September. The 24-hour course will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. over consecutive Saturdays in September, while the October class will be held from 6-10 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. No additional classes will be offered until next spring.
Classes with be taught at the former police and fire training academy, 1000 Calvert St.
The course follows guidelines mandated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Participants will receive a basic CERT course certificate from the Texas Department of Emergency Management that is approved by FEMA and accepted in all 50 states.
Register through the Preparing Texas website to secure a seat and receive a certificate.
