The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded an Airport Improvement Program grant to Fort Worth Alliance Airport.
The $5.5 million award will support a taxiway extension project needed after Amazon announced that it will open a regional air hub at the airport. The taxiway extension will provide Alliance the needed infrastructure to handle additional air traffic.
“Today’s announcement is another example of how Fort Worth Alliance Airport continues to demonstrate the success of one of this country’s extraordinary public-private partnerships,” said U.S. Rep. Kay Granger of Fort Worth. “This significant investment will support Amazon’s new facility that will employ close to 1,000 people, further contributing to the tremendous economic development in North Texas.”
When Amazon opens its regional air hub at Alliance Airport, the facility will be tailored specifically to Amazon Air’s larger-scale regional needs. Unlike other gateways and facilities in Amazon Air’s network, the regional air hub will include sortation capabilities and infrastructure to handle multiple flights daily. Construction has already begun on the new facility. The hub will include daily flights.
Tom Harris, president of Alliance Air/Aviation Services, said the partnership between the FAA, the City of Fort Worth and Hillwood Alliance “continues to be very strong and allows us to continue to grow the client base at the airport, as this taxiway being developed will serve Amazon’s first air cargo hub operation in the United States opening in October of this year.”
