Fort Worth purchased Sycamore Creek Golf Course in 1977.

A major sewer line replacement project that would affect Sycamore Creek Golf Course has given the city an opportunity to think about the long-term future of the nine-hole course.

The Water Department plans a sewer line replacement, part of which will run through the golf course. Construction is expected to start in October and last for 24 months. It would take an additional six months to restore the golf course, meaning Sycamore Creek would be closed for as long as 30 months.

“This project gives us the opportunity to determine what is the best use of park land and open space,” Acting Park and Recreation Director David Creek said.

City staff recommended to the City Council on Tuesday that Sycamore Creek Golf Course be closed and the land repurposed as a community park. The Council will vote on the plan at 7 p.m. June 11.

Fort Worth purchased Sycamore Creek Golf Course in 1977 and spent $2.58 million to renovate it in 1992-93. The course is considered a low-volume course, recording 12,500 rounds played each year. To break even, the city estimates the course would need to attract 24,000 rounds annually.

More than $1.5 million in deferred maintenance includes project such as improving the clubhouse, refurbishing sand bunkers and stabilizing banks along the creek.

By repurposing the golf course, the city could make greater and more diverse use of the land. The park could eventually be connected to the Trinity Trail System. Additional golf traffic is expected to go to Meadowbrook Golf Course, the municipal course closest to Sycamore Creek.

A 16-member study committee made up of key stakeholders unanimously agreed to close the course and repurpose the land. Four neighborhood associations and the Park and Recreation Board are in favor of repurposing.
