Fort Worth commuters encounter traffic signals along nearly every route they travel. And although signalized intersections are in place for increased safety, they can be a source of delay and frustration. Poor signal timing and outdated signal equipment can make a commute even more hectic and unpredictable.

Because of the importance of traffic signal timings for safety and efficiency, the City of Fort Worth adopted the Annual Traffic Signal Retiming Program. This proactive program schedules all traffic signals for major retiming evaluation and adjustment on a three-year cycle. Each year, about 300 traffic signals will be evaluated and retimed.

In addition to the annual retiming program, staff members routinely monitor traffic flow along arterials and at individual intersections to ensure efficient operation. Traffic signal timings and operational adjustments are frequently made based on routine monitoring and observation of traffic flow, residents’ requests or changes in traffic patterns due to new development or construction near the intersections.

The Transportation and Public Works Department operates and maintains traffic signals at more than 880 intersections throughout Fort Worth.

Benefits of up-to-date traffic signal timings include:

  • Improved traffic signal operation and safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Reduction in stops and delays for drivers.
  • Reduced travel time.
  • Lower fuel consumption.
  • Fewer harmful emissions such as nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.
