Raelynn is one of the dogs available for the Shelter Dog Slumber Party. She can be shy at first but is very sweet once she becomes comfortable. She would benefit greatly from a night out of the shelter and a good night's sleep in a comfy bed and quieter environment. She's dog-friendly and plays with other dogs at the shelter.

If you thought hosting a slumber party was only for teenagers, think again. Fort Worth Animal Care & Control is bringing back all the fun with one additional element: dogs.

On Jan. 18, the Fort Worth Animal Shelter is hosting a Shelter Dog Slumber Party. Fort Worth residents are invited to take one of the shelter’s dogs into their home for a night of cuddles, warm blankets and lots of love. The dog can be returned to the shelter the following day.

“Studies have shown even one night away from the shelter decreases stress in dogs and increases their adoptability,” said Jessica Brown, Fort Worth Animal Care & Control superintendent. “Even when dogs are returned after one night, valuable information about that dog is gained that will help us match up the dog with an adoptive family.”

The program is a part of the shelter’s Cowtown Crashpads foster program. Cowtown Crashpads normally helps pets that land at the shelter and can be sick or have other issues, where being in a foster home will provide that pet the care and attention they need until they can be adopted. The slumber party will give people the opportunity to help adoption-ready shelter pets and allow residents to experience being a foster parent.

Slumber party pets can be picked up from the main shelter, 4900 Martin St., between noon and 6 p.m. Jan. 18. The shelter will supply foster parents with a leash, collar, bag of food and overnight “report card” to help gain more information about the pet.

All animals available for the slumber party are spayed/neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccines. Staff recommends leaving your current pet at home when picking up party guests, as party day is likely to be stressful. The shelter staff will be happy to talk to fosters about the best ways to introduce sleepover guests at home.
