A lane configuration change is scheduled on Sylvania Avenue between 28th and Race streets.
Currently, Sylvania is marked as a four-lane, undivided roadway between 28th and Race streets. In response to requests from the community and in an effort to calm traffic in this primarily residential corridor, the city will reconfigure pavement markings along this segment of Sylvania Avenue to a three-lane section — one through lane in each direction and a continuous center left turn lane with 6-foot shoulders. The existing curb line of the street will remain the same.
This proposal was presented to the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association in April and again at a public meeting in August. In both cases, the proposed reconfiguration received overwhelming support.
Transportation & Public Works staff conducted an analysis of the traffic capacity needs for Sylvania Avenue and determined that the reconfiguration will provide acceptable levels of service for existing and future traffic conditions.
Work on new pavement markings will start on or about Oct. 25. Construction costs are estimated at about $37,000 with a 30- to 45-day completion time, depending on weather.
