City's mowing program continues through fall

With recent rains and high temperatures, grassy areas in parks and along roadways and at private properties have begun to sprout again. Here’s what you need to know about the City of Fort Worth’s mowing activity for the remainder of the growing season:

Private property

By city ordinance, grass and weeds may not exceed 12 inches tall. If a Code Compliance officer documents that the grass and weeds on a property are more than 12 inches high, the owners receives a one-time certified notice and then has 10 days to correct the violation. If it’s not taken care of by the deadline, a city contractor will do the job. The average bill for a residential lot is $250.

So far this fiscal year, the Code Compliance Department has documented 6,548 mowing violations:

  • 1,742 private properties were mowed by contractors hired by the city.
  • 4,580 were mowed by the owner before city contractors arrived.
  • 226 are pending mowing tickets.

To make the most of limited resources, efforts to identify high grass and weeds are focused on inner-city neighborhoods (inside Loop 820), but all Code Compliance officers identify violations while in route to other cases around the city. Code officers also investigate complaints from residents.

Public areas

The Park & Recreation Department is responsible for maintaining parks, traffic dividers, certain rights of way and city facility grounds. This year there have been some delays in mowing by contract mowers until city resources could be deployed.

This is the Park & Recreation Department’s mowing schedules for 2018:

  • City contractors mow, edge and trim traffic dividers (medians) every 14 days February through November.
  • Rights of way are on a 30-day cycle from March 1 through November.
  • Most parks are mowed on a 14-day cycle February through June, then on a 21-day cycle from July through November, depending on how much rain has fallen.
  • Tax-foreclosed city properties are maintained every 35 days by city staff.

The city is responsible for maintaining 377.45 miles of rights of way, 173.25 miles of medians and 1,878 acres of parkland.
