Keep grass and weeds mown, or pay up

Unkempt properties can attract mosquitoes, rodents and wildlife, which may carry dangerous diseases.

Grass is growing and it’s getting taller and taller. The city’s Code Compliance officials encourage residents to avoid having tall grass and weeds by mowing regularly.

If you live or own property within the Fort Worth city limits, keep your yard, vacant lot and land cut to less than 12 inches as provided in the city ordinance. If left overgrown, it can result in hefty fines from the city.

Keeping lawns and yards free of tall grass and weeds can prevent mosquitos, rodents and wildlife from invading your property and creating hazards to you, your family and your neighbors. It’s particularly important due to the outbreak of mosquitoes infected with the West Nile virus because mosquitoes seek shelter in tall grass during the heat of the day.

If a Code Compliance officer documents that the grass and weeds on your property are more than 12 inches high, you’ll receive a one-time certified notice and have 10 days to correct the violation. If you don’t, a city contractor will do the job for you, and it won’t be cheap. The average bill for a residential lot is $250.
