Swim Safe program aims to stop drownings in Fort Worth

Texas is No. 1 for pool drowning deaths, and Tarrant County is among the top three in Texas for child drowning deaths. Low-cost Swim Safe lessons are available to help stop this trend.

To help educate Fort Worth residents on water safety, the Fort Worth Drowning Prevention Coalition, of which the Fort Worth Fire Department is a member, is sponsoring these upcoming Safe Swim programs:

  • June 18-21 and June 25-28, 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. sessions at Forest Park Pool, 2850 Park Place.
  • July 9-12 and July 16-19, 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. sessions at Marine Park Pool, 303 N.W. 20th St.
  • July 23-26 and July 30-Aug. 2, 6:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. sessions at McDonald Southeast YMCA, 2801 Miller Ave.

Although these are not swim lessons per se, the in-water swimming and water-safety skills give participants exposure to and practice with skills such as submersion, swimming from one point to another, “falling in” and swimming back to the wall, and floating.

Class fee is $10 per student. Get registered.
