The outdoor warning system may be activated for any kind of emergency, not just severe weather.

During a natural or man-made disaster, the Fort Worth Fire Department’s Office of Emergency Management provides coordination and support to first responders who are on the site of the incident. Another responsibility is to provide advance warning and alerts to Fort Worth residents.

The Office of Emergency Management uses several methods to provide warnings and alerts.

Outdoor warning system

A network of 153 sirens is located throughout Fort Worth, White Settlement and Haslet. Sirens are located about one to 1 1/2 miles apart to provide overlapping audio warnings to people who are outside. Sirens will be activated for:

  • A tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service.
  • A tornado or funnel cloud reported by a reliable source.
  • Hail larger than 1 inch in diameter.
  • Sustained winds in excess of 60 mph.
  • Chemical spill emergency.
  • State or national emergency declared by the governor or president.
  • Other emergencies as appropriate.

When sirens are activated, quickly move inside a sturdy shelter and seek information from local radio and television stations.

The city conducts siren drills every Wednesday at 1 p.m., weather permitting. To avoid confusion, the drills will be canceled if skies are overcast or if severe weather is forecast.

Emergency text alerts

Office of Emergency Management staff send emergency text alerts to more than 42,000 Fort Worth residents. If you do not receive these free alerts, register by choosing the location that you want the alerts for, such as your home, business or school, and text the ZIP code for that location to 888777. This will register your cell phone to receive the alert. If you want alerts for more than one ZIP code, register online.

Accessible Hazard Alert System (AHAS)

AHAS is a visual alert provided by the city through Deaf Link. If you are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or deaf-blind, and live or work in Fort Worth, you can receive these alerts.

The alerts are transmitted in American Sign Language, captioned text in English and Spanish, spoken word in English and refreshable Braille. Registrants must supply their own video-capable device, such as a smartphone or email account. Register online.

Weather radio

The National Weather Service provides warning through NOAA All-Hazard Weather Radios. Fort Worth residents should use this method as a primary alert for severe weather and state and federal disasters. Radios are available for purchase at local and online retailers.
