Fort Worth residents with an access or functional special need are encouraged to register in the Special Needs Assistance Program offered by the Fort Worth Fire Department Office of Emergency Management.

Register online or call the Office of Emergency Management at 817-392-6170. Registration is free and should be updated annually.

While the SNAP name may mislead some residents to believe it is the similarly named federal food stamps program, it certainly is not. The Special Needs Assistance Program is a regional database housing important safety information about residents with special needs. Information provided by participants includes name, address, age, weight, language, emergency contacts and a description of the special need.

The term “special need” is not defined in the program and can include any physical, medical or intellectual condition that would restrict the participant’s ability to leave their residence in an emergency situation. Examples include mobility-restricted to the use of a wheelchair or walker, oxygen use, Alzheimer’s disease, autism, old age, bedridden, intellectual or developmental disability, difficulty breathing, blindness, hard of hearing or deaf and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Information contained in the database is used by local emergency management personnel in planning for disasters and fire and police personnel when responding to an emergency 911 call. All information provided is confidential and protected as allowed by law.
